Obamacare Is Slowly Dying, and No One Should Be Surprised

For quite a while now, we have been assured that we as a nation are well past the early hiccups and rough patches that attended the implementation of Obamacare. From here on out, we have been promised relatively smooth sailing. Everything is fine, everyone is happy, there is nothing bad or unpleasant to see, and we can all move along. Or so we are regularly told by the president of the United States, his political allies, and fans of Obamacare in general.

The Democratic Party’s Failure on Trade Policy

As anyone who follows the news is aware, Barack Obama’s biggest legislative goal for his second term is to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement. He may well get fast-track authority in order to push for passage of the agreement, and the agreement may yet pass. I hope that he does get fast-track authority, and that the agreement passes. But as anyone who follows the news is also aware, the initial attempt to pass fast-track authority failed in the House of Representatives, because Democrats decided to desert and defy a president from their own party:

More Things that Cause One to Wonder Whether the New York Times is in the Tank for Democrats

Remember this story? Sure you do. And now, there are follow ups to it! The New York Times has decided to put its clown-show act into overdrive with still more breathless reports about Marco Rubio’s spending habits. It seems that Rubio decided to use part of an $800,000 book advance in order to get himself “an $80,000 ‘luxury speedboat,’” and the Times seems to believe that this story confirms that Rubio is unqualified to be president of the United States.

Things that Cause One to Wonder Whether the New York Times is in the Tank for Democrats

The clown show that is the New York Times came out with what it believed to be a heavy breather of a story, in which Jeanette and Marco Rubio–aspiring first lady and president of the United States–are made out to be something resembling traffic scofflaws. As the Times reports, “review of records dating back to 1997 shows that the couple had a combined 17 citations: Mr. Rubio with four and his wife with 13.” Oh, my stars and garters, clutch thy pearls and get thee to thy fainting couches; the republic is clearly in danger if these two occupy 1600…

As Glenn Reynolds Would Put It, “Oh, THAT Liberal Media!”

I didn’t like it when I heard that George Stephanopoulos had left politics for journalism. I figured that he was only being rewarded for his political stardom, that he wouldn’t do the necessary work to transform himself into a serious journalist, and that–yes–he would use his media perch to act as a shill for the Democratic party. Over time, I earned a grudging respect for Stephanopoulos. He seemed to actually be a substantive journalist, and while I didn’t follow his media career closely, I did see instances of him holding Democrats’ feet to the fire. I figured that maybe I…

Scott Walker Is the Right’s Barack Obama

One of the reasons why Barack Obama has been a successful politician is the fact that he has been fortunate in his choice of political opponents. Those opponents regularly make themselves look bad when they are seen as entertaining theories that the president was not born an American citizen, that he is a secret Muslim, that he is a secret atheist, and/or that he is a “socialist” (it really ought to be enough to say that Barack Obama is a contemporary American liberal, and run with that). To be sure, most political opponents of the president don’t subscribe to these…

Is There an Actual Liberal Crackup?

Jennifer Rubin seems to think so. I am not so sure. Yes, the Democratic party has sustained a lot of losses in midterm elections, but the Republican party has proven unable to win the popular vote in 5 out of the last 6 presidential elections, and has lost 4 out of the last 6 presidential elections in the Electoral College, where it counts. For all of the controversies that the Center for American Progress has suffered, there is no think tank on the right with as much power and influence. I don’t see problems at the New York Times and Newsweek…

Chilling Story of the Day

If this is true, then I am appalled beyond measure: The intrusions into former CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson’s computers constitute the narrative spine of the reporter’s new book “Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington.” The book starts with not really a word, but a sound: “Reeeeeeeeeee.” That’s the noise that Attkisson’s Apple computer was making at 3:14 one morning. A Toshiba laptop computer issued by CBS News did the same thing a day earlier, around 4 a.m. All this goes down in October 2012, right in the midst of the…

Don’t Know Much about Recent History

The New York Times was forced to issue the following correction recently: An article on Sept. 11 about President Obama’s speech to the nation describing his plans for a military campaign against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, gave an incorrect comparison between efforts by the president to seek allies’ support for his plans and President George W. Bush’s efforts on such backing for the Iraq war. The approach Mr. Obama is taking is similar to the one Mr. Bush took; it is not the case that, “Unlike Mr. Bush in the Iraq war, Mr. Obama has sought to…
