Remember When We Thought We Had Functionally Eradicated Measles and Mumps?

Boy, those were the good old days:

Deadly diseases, once nearly wiped out, are making a frightening comeback in Maryland and across the country. Now — a warning that parents who don’t vaccinate their children are putting others at risk.

[. . .]

Measles, mumps, whooping cough — all deadly diseases. Until recently — virtually eliminated thanks to vaccines that prevent kids from getting sick.

But now doctors see an alarming trend — more and more people are coming down with these diseases.

“Kids die from measles on a regular basis. Kids are in hospitals and can die from whooping cough very commonly. So these kids are at risk,” said Dr. Scott Krugman, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

Here in Maryland, cases of whooping cough are skyrocketing — tripling from 123 cases in 2011 to nearly 370 last year. Outbreaks of measles and mumps have swept through states across the country.

Just how serious a problem is it when a child gets sick? Summer Robinson experienced it firsthand. Her son, Roarik, was just three-weeks-old when whooping cough put him in intensive care for five days and nearly killed him.

Bui: “When you went to the hospital and he was diagnosed with whooping cough, what went through your mind?”

Robinson: “You worry about, are they going to start breathing again? If they do start breathing, how long have they not been breathing? What are the side effects of that going to be? It’s just so scary.”

Be sure to thank your friendly neighborhood anti-vaccination lunatic for this truly horrible state of affairs. As the story points out, you have to be of a certain age in order to get vaccines, so if a child who should be vaccinated but hasn’t, comes into contact with a child too young to be vaccinated, the second child could be in a world of trouble.

Relatedly, I am entirely in favor of naming and shaming. (Note the URL.)

  1. Foreigners bring the diseases into the country and then the inoculation wackos help spread it. What a mess.

    1. There is, of course, no evidence that diseases like measles, mumps or whooping cough are being brought into the country by “foreigners.” And irrespective of the nationality of the disease transmitters, the problem here is the refusal by some to vaccinate their children. If we closed the borders against any and all immigration (an impossible prospect, but let’s pretend for the moment that it is not), and refused to vaccinate, we would still have the problems that inspired the writing of this blog post.

        1. Nonsense. measles, mumps and rubella can be and most certainly are, brought in and epidemics started by illegal aliens. The Liberal mindset actually doesn’t dislike this spreading and sharing of infectious disease; it’s multi-cultural and social-judicial. They think you should be PROUD to have your child infected to show “solidarity” with illegal aliens…….Just not THEIR kids.

  2. “you have to be of a certain age in order to get vaccines, so if a child who should be vaccinated but hasn’t, comes into contact with a child too young to be vaccinated, the second child could be in a world of trouble.”

Plus, even it my child IS vaccinated, there is a slight chance that she won’t develop the immunity.

    1. Herd immunity helps and very small children are often protected by maternal antibodies still circulating. That assumes the mother is immune, of course.

    2. It’s also possible Outer Space Big Foot is real. Just not much. Seems as if mass vaccinations worked just fine in this Country for 60 years to control diseases. Such is “progress” from PROGRESSIVES. They’ll have us back to the jungle in another 10 years. ( As is current in Detroit, Newark, Baltimore, Gary, East St. Louis, Chicago, Compton and all other decades long Liberal run Cities). So according to your logic, if one in 100 get infectious disease, it’s the same as if one in 1,000,000 get sick from failed vaccinations?

  3. When it comes to whooping cough even vaccinated kids get it. Happened to my daughter last year and the docs told me that the vaccine only confers about 3 years of guaranteed immunity. It only takes a couple of Jenny McCarthys to ruin herd immunity with that short of a protective effect.
