Illinois Embraces Marriage Equality

Yesterday, the legislature in my home state passed a bill that will finally allow marriage equality by permitting same sex couples to tie the knot. A number of my social media friends–and lots of other people who are celebrating offline–are filled with joy because they get to marry and spend the rest of their lives with the ones they love, and the ones who love them. And straight people like me should be filled with joy as well. After all, if we truly care about family values, we should make it easy for grown adults with the capacity to consent to enter into loving, monogamous marriages that entail a lifetime of happy commitment, and allow for the creation of caring and nurturing families that have the potential to raise great and good future citizens of this country.

Usually, a deal this awesome has a downside. I am pretty adept at finding the downside of deals that are too good to be true. I’m not finding any downside here. Either that means my skills are on the decline, or it means that this deal doesn’t have any drawbacks worth talking about.

Congratulations to everyone for whom November 5, 2013 has become a golden day in history. Your happiness uplifts us all.
